It's called Guillain-Barre syndrome. It's a demyelinating disease of the
peripheral nervous system. There is some evidence to suggest that it may
be caused, in part, by infection with a common gut pathogen, Campylobacter
jejuni. Many people study demyelinating diseases, so Net searches should
yield results. There is also a Usenet group, alt.support.mult-sclerosis,
which may also give you information if you ask.
