Neurocognitive Rehab, Autism
I am attempting to get basic info and also research started relative to
the use of neurocognitive rehab approaches via computerized software ala
Ralph Reitan's REHABIT and Odie Bracy's PSS COG for the reatment of
PDD/autism. Please refer to the e-mail copies below for added focus.

Hi,
On tomorrow, September 15, I will be speaking at the MAAPing the Future
conference in Indianapolis Sponsored by the Indiana Resource Center for
Autism Institute for the Study of Developmental Disabilities. When I was
first approached by Susan Moreno to do this I said you have come to the
wrong place, my specialty is brain injury rehab. She informed me that
she and some of her colleagues had been using my CogRehab software for a
number of years as cognitive therapy exercises for autistic children.
She was basically following the same protocol I had been using with my
head injured patients. This involves starting with basic attentional and
sensory input skills, working through to executive processing of
incoming information and finally tying these skills together with more
complex exercises involving memory and problem solving skills.
I do not see any reason that these exercises would not be appropriate.
There are a number of psychiatric facilities around the nation now,
using my software to address the same cognitive skill areas with their
patients. Those I have talked to report excellent results.
If you would like a catalog and Demo diskettes send back a surface
mailing address.

Dear Dr. Reitan, rgst42 at aol.com
My 27 year old autistic son underwent 300 hours of REHABIT in Hawaii at
the ages 11-12. The imporvement in functioning was dramitic; however,
since autism at that time was not suspected to have any sort fo
neurogical implications, other resaons for the improvement were
postulated.
Ms. Jackie Tarpy, a former employee of yours, is working with an
excellent neuropsychologist to create a neurocog rehab program more
appropriate for my son now that he has matured, and that program is now
being implemented. Since REHABIT isn't quite appropriate given the
difference of paradigms and neurology ---- although the REHABIT premises
are compatible --- Ms. Tarpy and the neuropsychologist are sort of
re-inventing the wheel.
Dr. Odie Bracy's software has been considered and one or two packages
used. However, the reason for this message can be expressed no better
than by the followng e-mail message from Dr. Heher in South Africa:

A research topic suggestion:
I have been searching for weeks to find authoratative sources of what is
good and works in the way of educational software for autistic/PDD
children, with very mixed sucess. There is a lot out there, but much of
it of dubious value.
Would it be a suitable topic for a graduate to research and evaluate
available resources and design or propose better options? Dr Tony Heher
