In the context of my own interests the anterior cingulate gyrus has been
implicated as forming an important part of the anterior attentional
system which has been suggested to play an important role in the
maintenance of conscious attention for target detection and selection,
and perhaps also an inhibitory role (see papers by Posner and colleagues
eg Posner & Rothbart, 1992 or Posner & Peterson, 1990). There are also
several PET studies which support this general idea. Regarding
anatomical connections of the AC gyrus...try looking at papers by
Goldman-Rakic (1988, 1994); I know she has reported connections between
the AC gyrus and posterior parietal cortex and also the prefrontal
cortex. Hope this is useful.
