Question about dream inducing compounds

I thought the reason that some foods promote dreaming is that they just 
wake you up more during the night.  There's a cute Peanuts cartoon I 
remember where Snoopy eats a pizza before he goes to bed and has vivid 
dreams all night.  A large, salty meal right beffore bedtime will cause 
you to wake up more and thus remember more dreams.  You just don't sleep 
as deeply.  Stimulants do the same thing, while sedatives suppress dreaming.
