A.R. Luria called this phenomenon "kinetic melody" and I believe
he attributed its genesis to both the basal ganglia
and premotor areas.
Some biographies which describe people afflicted by the absence
of a "kinetic melody" are:
A.R.Luria, *The man with a shattered world*
Oliver Sacks, *A leg to stand on*
A novel about a neurotic who worries that he can't link isolated
movements into a continuous whole is:
Italo Spevo, *Confessions of Zeno*
They are all worth reading.
