I was at the Human Brain Mapping conference in Boston last week, and there
were numerous papers showing activation of primary sensory and motor areas
during mental imagery.
For example, Hodge et al, NeuroImage 3(3):S209, report activation of SI
and sometimes SII when imaging tactile stimulation of face or digits.
They used echoplanar fMRI on a GE 1.5 T machine.
