                     ANNOUNCEMENT AND CALL FOR PARTICIPATION

                             Fuzzy-Neuro Systems '97
                         - Computational Intelligence -
                           4th International Workshop

                               12 to 14 March 1997
                        University of Paderborn, Germany

Fuzzy-Neuro Systems '97 is the fourth event of a well established series of
workshops with international participation. Its aim is to give an overview
of the state of the art in research and development of fuzzy systems and
artificial neural networks. Another aim is to highlight applications of these
methods and to forge innovative links between theory and practice by means of
creative discussions. State of the art presentations are held and discussed at
the workshop, with solutions stemming from the areas of fuzzy logic, neural
networks and evolutionary algorithms at the center of research attention.

Multivalued logic and fuzzy logic - which is based on the aforementioned -
as well as neural networks are practice related research areas of artificial
intelligence, the combination and interaction of which is frequently
characterized by the term Computational Intelligence. It is the aim of this
workshop to give an overview of the current state of the art in research and
development of fuzzy systems. Presentations about artificial neural networks
will enable a complementary comparison. In this context evolutionary algorithms
play an increasing role in optimization. In addition, applications presented of
these methods will enable the strengthing innovative links between theory and
practice.

The organizer of this workshop is the Research Committee 1.2 "Inference Systems"
(Fachausschuss 1.2 "Inferenzsysteme") of the German Society of Computer Science
(Gesellschaft fuer Informatik e. V. (GI)) supported by the Ministry for Science
and Research of Northrhine-Westfalia (Ministerium fuer Wissenschaft und
Forschung des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen), the German Research Community
(Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG)) and the Funding Association for the
German Science (Stifterverband fuer die Deutsche Wissenschaft). Preceding
workshops were held in Braunschweig (1993), Munich (1994) and Darmstadt (1995).
Invited plenary speakers were Prof. Dr. D. Dubois, Prof. Dr. J. A. Feldman,
Dr. H. Hellendoorn, Prof. Dr. L. Koczy, Prof. Dr. R. Kruse, Prof. Dr. E. H.
Mamdani, Prof. Dr. L. A. Zadeh and Prof. Dr. H.-J. Zimmermann.

Invited plenary speakers of this workshop "Fuzzy-Neuro Systems '97" who will
give comprehensive overviews on selected special fields and the titles of their
talks are:

Prof. Dr. J. C. Bezdek, University of West Florida, USA,
"Computational Intelligence Revisited: with Applications to Edge Detection
in Digital Imagery",

Prof. Dr. E. P. Klement, Johannes Kepler University of Linz, Austria,
"Fuzzy Logic im Kontext der mehrwertigen Logik",

Prof. Dr. T. Kohonen, Helsinki University of Technology, Finland,
"Emergence of Optimal Invariant-Feature Detectors in a New Neural Network
Architecture",

Prof. Dr. W. Pedrycz, University of Manitoba, Canada,
"Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery through Fuzzy Neurocomputing",

Prof. Dr. H.-P. Schwefel, University of Dortmund, Germany,
"Evolutionaeres Rechnen in der Computational Intelligence".

Focal points of presentations in oral sessions will be in the areas of fuzzy
systems and fuzzy logic, particularly on fuzzy control and fuzzy controllers,
neural networks for classification as well as optimization and learning, neuro-
fuzzy systems for function approximation as well as applications to control,
mechanical engineering and medical engineering and finally evolutionary
algorithms for optimization problems. Focal points of presentations in flexible
sessions will be in the fields of learning algorithms and generation of fuzzy
rules, applications of fuzzy controllers, hybrid soft computing systems,
pattern recognition, parameter evaluation, application of neural networks,
classification of process states and intelligent optimization.

The program consists of 5 invited plenary talks and 68 reviewed contributions,
30 of which presented as talks and 38 presented in flexible sessions. By these
contributions the total spectrum as well as current research directions in soft
computing and computational intelligence will be exemplarily shown. Various
system demonstrations will offer an additional insight into related activities
in Germany.

Conference languages will be German and English.

The program and further information is available in World Wide Web under
