re necrosis vs. apoptosis in brain injury: might depend on severity of
injury, distance of cells from focus of trauma, etc.; and not only "as
the crow flies" but according to some aspects of brain organization. 
It's late and I don't have references right at hand, but may try to
follow with more details.
