My understanding of the increase in brain power as we move from invertetbrates to vertebrates has to do with the enhanced integrating activity and efficiency in the "higher" nervous systems. Read Harry Jerison's work on this. Of course "higher" brains also have more structures and neurons as well. Gary Greenberg
