King Herod was an Edomite, not a Hebrew. Edomites are referred to as
"jews", but Hebrews are not.
It's true that the patriarch of the Edomites, Esau, was a descendant of Eber
(which made Esau a Hebrew), but he married jews [read: Canaanite women] and
was exiled from his people. He and his descendants for tens of generations
never intermarried with, socialized with, nor had any other contact with,
the true Hebrews (one of whom was Jacob, from whom all Israelites are
descendants).
How do we know this? Jesus told these jews [read: Edomites] that the they
were the "remnants" of Abraham, but not his true descendants.
John 8:37 I know that ye are Abraham's seed; but ye seek to kill me,
because my word hath no place in you.
John 8:38 I speak that which I have seen with my Father: and ye do that
which ye have seen with your father.
John 8:39 They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus
saith unto them, If ye were Abraham's children, ye would do the works of
Abraham.
The word "children" is translated from the Greek word "teknon" which has two
meanings: "children", and "descendant". The word "seed" is translated from
the Greek word "sperma" which has two meanings: the male sperm, and
"remnant".
In this instance, Jesus obviously wasn't claiming that they weren't
"children", so it means "descendants". And He obviously wasn't claiming
that they were male sperm, so the only alternative is that He was referring
to them as the "remnant" of Abraham.
iow, by that time, 30-40 generations had passed since Esau was kicked out
and these Edomites were 99.9999999% Canaanite and 0.00000001% Abrahamite.
