The Israelites continually failed to live up to God's commands--and they
were continuously punished by God for it.
The jews themselves claim that it's the Sephardic jews who are descendants
of the Edomites, who were the bastard race which was created when Esau
married Canaanite women. Even though they're only 2% of the world
population of jews now, this is the *slim* connection that jews claim they
have to Abraham.
How slim is the connection? At the time of Christ, they were 99.99995%
Canaanite and 0.00005% Abraham. That connection is even slimmer today, and
the other 98% of "jews" can't even make this *slim* claim.
