They're not too far off.
Two different sources, Infoplease Almanac and Gallup, put the total
percentage of Americans who belong to Christian churches at 86%, with one
being the membership reported by the churches themselves and the other being
a poll asking people their personal preferences.
Another 9% stated they weren't members of churches, and it's possible that
they were Christians like Thomas Jefferson who just didn't belong to an
organized church.
