FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT

Location

The Congress, organized by the Parasitology Department of the
Science Faculty, University of Granada (Spain), is to be held at the
Granada ski station, Sol y Nieve, in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
The 1st COST-B9 Congress will take place from 31 May to 3 June,
1998, and the IOCD Workshop on the 4 and 5 of June, 1998.

The Sierra Nevada massif makes Granada a privileged province.
At a half hour by car from the capital city, the snow-capped mountain
soars to the highest altitudes in the Iberian peninsula, within a unique
natural park of vast meadows and rare and endemic plant species. For its
natural treasures and its incalculable value, it was declared in 1996 an
Integral Reserve of the Biosphere by the Man and Biosphere Programme of
UNESCO.

Scientific programme

The purpose of this Congress is to review the current state of
COST-B9 Action in antiprotozoal chemotherapy. The scientific
programme will be based on presentations of invited speakers, members
of the COST programme and other scientists. Most presentations will
be given orally, although space will be available for poster
presentations.

The 1998 Congress will deal with the following topics:
- Drug-resistance mechanisms
- Novel targets for antiparasitic drugs
- Rational development of drugs
- Plants as sources for new drugs
- Methods for "in vitro" screening of new drugs

Registration fee

Registration will take place in the afternoon and early evening on
31 May 1998, and will be followed by a welcoming of the attendants.
Two full days of scientific presentations are planned for Monday,
June 1st and Wednesday, June 3rd, while one day will be dedicated
to a visit to the Alhambra, the Moorish Palace overlooking the city
of Granada. On Thursday and Friday, 4 and 5 June, workshops will be
held on medicinal chemistry. A Congress dinner is planned for June
2nd. The participants of the COST-B9 Congress will be welcome to
participate in the IOCD workshops, and vice versa.

Registration fee: 15.000 ptas.
COST-B9 members will not be charged a registration fee.
Congress dinner: 9.000 ptas.
During the Congress, participants who paid the registration fee will
receive the mid-day meal in the same hotel where the congress is
to be held, except the day of the visit to Granada. The evening meal
must be paid separately. Companions of participants may join in the
mid-day meal, but after prior payment.

Lodging

Because of the special characteristics of the Sierra Nevada, all
participants must lodge in the Hotel Kenya (headquarters for the
Congress), it is a four-star hotel (single room with breakfast and
supper for 8750 ptas/day, 6350 ptas per person for a double room),
for which "Viajes Castulo S.A.L.", which has been designated the
official travel agency, will take care of the reservations. The
evening meals can also be arranged through the agency.
The participants who so desire can make air or rail ticket
reservations from their points of origin to Granada, by contacting
this agency, which will provide free transportation from the airport
or train station to Hotel Kenya and back again.

Social programme

A social programme is being organized especially for the companions of
the participants, for the days of the congress. In addition, the
participants can combine work with excursions, which the travel agency
will be happy to organize.
