Chapter 6. (Biochemical applications of carbon-carbon couplings),
p.200-218, in J. L. Marshall, "Carbon-carbon and carbon-proton
NMR couplings," Verlag Chemie, (1983) would give you some clue.
`Three'-bond C-C couplings for amino acids are discussed in pages
214-216 of this book.

Three-bond 13CO-13CO couplings in phthalimide and related compounds
are briefly described around p.189.

COMMENTS OF DALIBOR STYS, PLANT CELL BIOLOGY, LUND UNIVERSITY,SWEDEN

In my opinion, this letter is based on assumption that there is no point in
performing tests of modern nuclear weapons if not globally, than at least in the
case of France. There are many reasons why this assumption is not correct.

1) There is number of nations in the world who are allowed to have nuclear
weapons and in the same time allowed to kill their own citizens. Namely: China,
Pakistan, India, Russia and perhaps Iran, Iraq, North Korea, ....

2) There is little hope that democracy will spread rapidly into countries listed
in previous paragraph. Majority of these countries is poor and people there have
little or no access to information about foreign countries. On top of it,
democratic countries are very slow in helping democratic nations or movements.
Few recent examples from Europe: Czechoslovakia 1938, Hungary 1954,
Czechoslovakia 1968, Poland 1979, not speaking about Bosnia these days. Do you
really think that somebody would be willing to help democratic uprising in
China?

3) There is no guarantee that a rich democratic country will never turn into a
dictatorship. Examples after World War II - Czechoslovakia and Argentina. Thus
if only USA were left with advanced nuclear weaponry it would be a piece of cake
for a dictator to start negoatiation with the other dictators about division of
the planet.

The argument about the democratic traditions is not quite valid. The democratic
tradition is a poorly defined term. The anglo-saxonic countries like to count
from the 12th century, France likes to count from late 18th but there was couple
of bloody dictators in these countries since that. With exception of
Switzerland, the rest of Europe is in even worse situation.

Having the previous arguments in mind, I decided that I strongly support
existence of several independent lines of development of advanced nuclear
weaponry in democratic countries. Perhaps, I am not so proud on mankind and not
so confident in its bright future. I think, however, that it might be usefull to
open the textbook of modern history time by time.

With best wishes

Dalibor Stys

Since a few people expressed their opinions on Nuclear Tests etc. on this
discussion list, I feel compelled to say that I do NOT agree with them.
I think that the right to defend yourself is not absolute, and can not include
the right to threaten with mass-killings. I don't see how the "pursuit of
happiness" can be reconciled with brute-force policies.

I just mail this to voice a different opinion in this forum. But I'd much
rather stop the discussion, which should not take place at all here.
Signing the WWW-petition, or discussing elsewhere is a better way.

Best regards to all,

Ton Rullmann.

We are seeking an NMR spectroscopist to join the Edinburgh Biomolecular
NMR Unit to fill a new MRC-funded post-doctoral position. We are
looking for an individual with substantial proven expertise in multidimensional
heteronuclear NMR of macromolecules. Starting date is flexible.

Our recently established Unit is equipped with a new, dedicated
Varian INOVA 600 with 4 channels, tri-axial gradients etc. We also have
access to a second, modern three-channel 600 MHz spectrometer.

Edinburgh is arguably Europe's most beautiful city (and the weather
is not as bad as you might think.)

I will be happy to supply more information if you are interested.
We are on the net: http://www.chem.ed.ac.uk/Welcome.html.

Hello:

I will be teaching a 4th year undergraduate course
on proteins and would like to show the class a short
video illustrating some aspect of protein dynamics
(more for a dramatic visual appeal than for technical details).

Does anyone know of sources of such educational videos
or have any recommendations?

With thanks,

Axlexej's comments are spot on with respect to Protesting
France's nuclear testing. No protesting is warranted.

Each country has a right and responsibility to defend itself and
its citizens and their rights against aggressors
and each citizen of each country should be able to defend himself
against the forces within his country which would take away his
life, liberties and pursuit of happiness. In the US the right
to bear arms is one of the most important, if not most important
rights and responsibilities, of each citizen. Anyone who tries
to usurp/take away this right and responsibility should be held
up to intense scrutiny.
If Tibet had the bomb maybe they would not be under the
domination of China, as the leaders of China would have thought
twice before invading and occupying this sovereign state, which
they now claim is part of China, which it is not. It is an
occupied state. The old Soviet Union let the Baltic States
become free, when will China do the same with its occupied states.
More important than pounding on France is to pound on China and
revoke most favored country status, etc. And recognize Taiwan
as the true representative of the Free Democratic Chinese People.

Dear friends,

I appologise to anybody who felt offended by my posting regarding nuclear tests.
The letter, when I got it, was signed exclusively by natural scientists. I was
just scared how many people, whose intelligence and knowledge I deeply respect,
apparently have signed a letter containing only a simple slogan. Simple slogans,
understandable by everybody, brought nazism to democratic Germany and comunism
to democratic Czechoslovakia.

I do not think that is was able to cover all aspects of the subject, either.

I used a the networks to provoke people to think before the simple slogan
reaches their mailbox.

Thank you for your patiency.

First of all I'd like to know what this article is doing in this newsgroup ?
Secondly, whovever wrote this article has very little idea of what he is talking
about. He classifies India, a parliamentary democracy ever since its independence
in 1947, along with countries such as China and Russia, and I quote "where
there is little hope that democracy will spread rapidly " and also as a country "which
kills its own citizens".

If you do not agree with me you are welcome to have a discussion with me. I can be reached by
email at the above address, but as I said before, this is not the appropriate forum for such a
discussion.

P.S. If the general idea of the posting was to rally against nuclear tests, then I do agree that they
are against the interest of mankind in general.

Cheers,

Ronnie Ghose.

Hello,

Does anyone have any experiance in recording T1rho 2D spectra? I'm especially
interested in microprograms for a Bruker AM 500 spectrometer, as we have never
done this kind of thing before in our lab.

Thanks,

I would like to be able to access a database via the internet that is able
to carry out substructure searching to find related compounds (ie
benzaldehyde and vanillin) and provide details such as pKa, etc. Details
on biological and toxicity data of such structures would be of benefit to.

If anyone out there knows of such a database could you please inform me of
the address.

Thank you in advance for any help.

available data on human and bovine serum albumins, in particular is there a thorough

                  POST-DOCTORAL AND RESEARCHER POSITIONS
IN PROTEIN NMR SPECTROSCOPY AND MOLECULAR DESIGN

The NMR laboratory of the Biotechnology Research Institute (BRI) anticipates
the opening of one or two postdoctoral and/or researcher positions starting
January, 1996 to characterize the solution structures of protein-peptide
complexes. This research is part of a multi-disciplinary effort for the
design of inhibitors of blood coagulation, protease regulation and signal
transduction. Specific protein targets include coagulation factors (thrombin
or factor Xa), cysteine protease cathepsins, epidermal growth factor receptors
and protein tyrosine phosphotases (PTPases). The binding proteins for NMR work
include EGF-like domains, kringle proteins, protease activation fragments and
SH2 domains.

Candidates for postdoctoral fellows must have a Ph.D. degree in Chemistry or
Biochemistry and have demonstrated experience in NMR spectroscopy and its use
in protein structure determination. Experience in protein purification is also
an important asset. The researcher (RA - Research Associate) positions require
postdoctoral experience in protein NMR spectroscopy or in biophysical chemistry
of proteins. A successful candidate for a research associate must be able to
carry out research independently and must also have good interpersonal, commu-
nication and writing skills.

The Biotechnology Research Institute (BRI) is a Federal research organization
interfacing academia and industry. Your challenge at BRI will be to succeed
in high-impact scientific research while generating interests from pharmaceu-
tical industry. Qualified individuals motivated by these challenges are in-
vited to forward your resume to:

               Feng Ni, Ph.D.
               Head of Biomolecular NMR
               Biotechnology Research Institute

Dear netters:

We are about to run the hcchtocsy 3D pulse sequense on our protein.
Since this is the first time we deal with double labeled proteins, I
would like to get some pointers from you.

The first question is: When setting up the experiment, one must set two
pulse length for C13: pwca and pwco. pwca is the regular pw90 for C13.
pwco is for CO carbons. How to measure or estimate what the pulse length
and Power level for this pulse?

The second questions is: If the pulse sequense was written to use
waveform generator, what will happen if we use a group of hard pulses to
simulate? Has anyone done this before or it is just not usable?

Our system is a Varian Unity plus 500 with inverse detection triple
resonance PFG probe (gradient for z only). If you have any suggestions
or valuable experience regarding this pulse sequense, please drop me a
mail. Any help from you will be greatly appreciated.

	 **** How to cancel a BIOSCI e-mail subscription ****

If you want to cancel your e-mail subscription to this group,
PLEASE DO NOT POST YOUR UNSUBSCRIBE REQUEST TO THE NEWSGROUP ADDRESS
(NOR REPLY TO A MESSAGE POSTED TO THE NEWSGROUP)!!!

This would send your request to all of the readers of the newsgroup,
but it might still not be seen by the BIOSCI staff - thus you would
annoy many people and possibly not accomplish your goal anyway.

IF YOU ARE LOCATED IN THE AMERICAS OR PACIFIC RIM COUNTRIES, please
send a message to

biosci@net.bio.net

Instructions on how to subscribe/unsubscribe will be returned
automatically, so the contents of your message do not matter.

IF YOU ARE LOCATED IN EUROPE, AFRICA OR CENTRAL ASIA, please send a
message to

MXT@dl.ac.uk

containing the word

in the body of the message to retrieve e-mail server instructions.
Any text placed on the Subject: line of your message will be ignored,
so be sure to put the "help" command in the body of the message.

If you need personal assistance, a BIOSCI staff member can be
contacted at either of the following addresses. Please contact the
address designated for your location.

		 **** SEARCHING BIOSCI ARCHIVES ****

The easiest way to search the BIOSCI archives is to use Mosaic or
another World Wide Web browser and connect to the BIOSCI WWW home page
at URL http://www.bio.net/. Select the hypertext link to the BIOSCI
archives. This gives you read access to all newsgroup messages and
the ability to search the indexes described below.

You can also use gopher software and connect over the Internet to
net.bio.net, the U.S. BIOSCI computer. We maintain three indexes
which are searchable from the main gopher menu on net.bio.net: (1) an
index of all BIOSCI postings; (2) an index of individual journal
article references from the Table of Contents postings on the
BIO-JOURNALS newsgroup; and (3) an index of BIOSCI users including
regular mail and e-mail addresses, phone/FAX numbers, research
interests, and newsgroup participation.

E-mail users can search the BIOSCI archives by using our waismail
e-mail server. For instructions send the message

help

to waismail@net.bio.net. Leave the Subject: line blank (anything
entered on the Subject: line is ignored).

WAIS software can also be used to search the archives as described in
the BIOSCI FAQ (see below).

Finally, the BIOSCI archive files are accessible by anonymous FTP to
net.bio.net [134.172.2.69] in the directory pub/BIOSCI.

**** BIOSCI FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ) SHEET ****

New users of BIOSCI/bionet may want to read the "Frequently Asked
Questions" or "FAQ" sheet for BIOSCI. The FAQ provides details on how
to participate in these forums and fix problems that you might
encounter in using the newsgroups. The FAQ and other BIOSCI
documentation is available through our WWW home page at URL
http://www.bio.net/. It is also available for anonymous FTP from
net.bio.net [134.172.2.69] in pub/BIOSCI/doc/biosci.FAQ or for
retrieval by gopher to net.bio.net, port 70. It may also be requested
by sending the command

info faq

in the body of an e-mail message to the Internet address
biosci-server@net.bio.net. Please do not enter the info faq command
on the Subject: line of your message since the e-mail server ignores
text on the Subject: line.

The FAQ is also posted on the first of each month to the newsgroup
BIONEWS/bionet.announce immediately following the posting of the
BIOSCI information sheet.

**** BIOSCI USER ADDRESS DIRECTORY ****

Please take this opportunity to add your name and address information
to the BIOSCI User Address Database if you have not already done so.

Below is the address form that we would like each reader of the
BIOSCI/bionet newsgroups to complete and return if you would like to
be listed in our database. The database serves as a directory that
enables biologists, who are currently using (or even just reading) the
BIOSCI newsgroups, to look up e-mail addresses and other information
about our users.

The address database is reindexed nightly for WAIS, waismail, gopher,
and WWW access (the URL is http://www.bio.net). If you have access to
gopher, connect to net.bio.net to search the database. If you have
access to WAIS, please use our WAIS source biologists-addresses.src.
If you are not on the Internet, please use our waismail server (send
the word "help" to waismail@net.bio.net to get instructions; any text
on the Subject: line of your message will be ignored, so put the help
command in the body of the mail message.).

IMPORTANT INSTRUCTIONS - PLEASE READ CAREFULLY

Please enter all responses after the : on each line, leaving one (1)
blank space after the : (i.e., before the start of your text).

Please do NOT extend your responses past the end of each line (80
characters).

PLEASE DO NOT alter any of the field identifiers such as "first name: ".
If you have nothing to enter after a field identifier, PLEASE LEAVE IT
- do not delete it even if there is no data on the line in question.

Several lines are provided at the end of the form for comments, but,
please adhere to the line length restriction.

On the date: line, please enter the date in the DD-MM-YY format, e.g.,
15-05-93 for 15 May 1993. This line will tell others when the
information was last updated. Please be sure to include the 0's for
single digit days or months, e.g., 15-05-93, not 15-5-93.

Note that the "e-mail network: " line below is for specifying, e.g.,
"Internet," "BITNET," "EARN," "JANET," or whatever other network that
your computer may be on.

If you are uncertain about any field, please feel free to leave it
blank, but please DO NOT DELETE the field identifier from the form!

In the first field below, "New information or Update ...", please
enter "N" if this is the first time that you have registered in the
directory or "U" if you are correcting a listing that you sent to us
previously.

The comment: lines may be used for anything that you like but PLEASE
DO NOT DELETE THEM FROM THE FORM OR ALTER THEM. One suggested use is
to list the names of the newsgroups in which you participate. Please
use the MAILING LIST name (see below - the latest version of the list
can be requested from biosci@net.bio.net) instead of the USENET name
even if you don't participate by e-mail. WAIS might get confused by
the periods in the USENET names. This allows one to retrieve via WAIS
or waismail the list of participants in a particular group.

For example:

comment: ARABIDOPSIS PLANT-BIOLOGY BIONEWS

On the comment: lines
use these names below ---- NOT the USENET names below

NAOMI - Version Upgrade Announcement
(Please note, NAOMI is provided at zero charge for academic use)

(e-mail contact smb@bioch.ox.ac.uk)
_____________________________________________________________________________

The computer program NAOMI Version 2.10a is available _now_ via
anonymous ftp from:

        nmrz.ocms.ox.ac.uk

in directory pub/smb/naomi/

Academic and commercial upgrades from Version 2.10 will work with current main
license keys and any existing "feature" license keys. Users of earlier
versions than 2.10 will need new license keys to allow the upgrade to work.
_____________________________________________________________________________

Upgrade features requested additional facilities for analysis of hydrogen
bonds and chain-breaks.
_____________________________________________________________________________

See the World Wide Web NAOMI site at:

    http://www.ocms.ox.ac.uk/~smb/Software/N_details/naomi.html

for more details of the program.

What is NAOMI?

NAOMI is a computer program aimed at both specialist and non-specialist
researchers who make use of three-dimensional structures of proteins
in their work.

The general features offered by the program make it it a useful addition to
programs such as X-PLOR for performing structure-function related
computations on protein structures. In addition, a number of specific
types of calculation are offered which are of interest to groups of people.

NAOMI provides interfaces to the graphics programs MOLSCRIPT, INSIGHT II
and QUANTA, as well as its own graphical output, to allow efficient
visualizations of the results of calculations and analyses. It is
operated by an intuitive command language, coupled with interactive
documentation, that allows the user to perform manipulations of and
calculations on three-dimensional structures of proteins in a
time-efficient manner.

Features include:

    General structural analysis
Interfaces to computer graphics programs (MOLSCRIPT, INSIGHT II, QUANTA)
    Dealing with problematic pdb files
    Simulating dynamic properties of proteins
Prediction of protein function from 3-D structure
    Protein Engineering and Design
    NMR structure refinement
    Tertiary structure prediction
    Prediction of protein folding pathways

NAOMI is Copyright Simon M. Brocklehurst 1992-1995.

NB NAOMI currently works only on Silicon Graphics workstations running
IRIX 5.*
