MEASUREMENT OF MOLD GROWTH BY RESPIROMETERY
The growth of mold in animal feed can be measured indirectly by measuring
O2 consumption and CO2 production. Growth of mold increases with
increasing amounts of moisture in the feed, but it can be suppressed by
the addition of fungicides.
Feed manufacturers and farmers are interested in creating feed
formulations which are resistant to mold growth. A 10 gram of sample of
feed containing 15% of water was tested by Columbus Instruments
Respirometer over 5 day period. It has been found that little or no mold
growth occurs in feed with less 15% of water. In data obtained rapid mold
growth demonstrated by increased O2 consumption and CO2 production appears
after 3.5 days after water was added to the feed. By the fifth day , the
rates of O2 consumption and CO2 production have increased to over 20 times
of the background level.
