Dear Investigator,
On behalf of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Office of the
Director has charged the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, in
conjunction with 17 other Institutes and Centers, to convene a Rat Model
Priority Meeting, which will be held on May 3, 1999 in Bethesda, MD, to
discuss and develop a plan for the rat as a model system. This meeting
is designed to illustrate and define the critical role the rat can play
in delineating health and disease given the investment in human and
mouse structural and functional genomic programs.
We are soliciting input from the community concerning this meeting. To
comment, please point your web browser to

will be shared with the meeting participants, Dr. Varmus, and the NIH
Institute Directors and/or designates. The answers to these questions
will be compiled on April 9, 1999, so please send in your comments prior
to that date.
All responses are posted on the web and available for your review. To
