Dear UroNet'rs,
An authoritative source for the scientific names of living amphibians and
their correct spelling is:
Frost, D.R., ed. 1985. AMPHIBIAN SPECIES OF THE WORLD, Allen Press, Inc.,
and the Assoc. of Systematic Collections, Lawrence, Kansas.
A second publication contains changes made between 1985 and 1993:
Duellman, W.E. 1993. AMPHIBIAN SPECIES OF THE WORLD: ADDITIONS AND
CORRECTIONS. Univ. Kansas Mus. Nat. Hist., special publ. no. 21.
Pleurodeles is discussed on pp. 612-613 of Frost, where "waltl" is cited
as the correct spelling and "waltli" as incorrect.
Additions and corrections are always being made to amphibian taxonomy,
so publications like the two above will never be completely up to date,
but they should be able to correctly answer most queries like the one
posed by Professor Saez.
