Rates of ageing

In an effort to get some activity into this group, I will post the
following naive question. Does anyone have a good explanation why
rates of ageing vary between species? For example, dogs get
arthritis, gray hair at about 15 years or so, while humans take
much longer? Is this an effect of metabolic rate, and does it
correlate with results in tissue culture?
