Postgraduate Scholarship in Plant Sciences
Faculty of Agriculture
The University of Western Australia

Genetics and breeding of Australian native plants

A postgraduate scholarship is available for a suitably qualified candidate
with at least a 2A honours degree in agricultural sciences, biological
sciences or the equivalent to undertake research studies leading to a PhD.

The successful applicant is expected to work on the reproductive biology
of Chamelaucium and Verticordia. The knowledge obtained from this study
will help to facilitate interspecific and intergeneric genetic
introgression in Australian native plants. This is part of a large
project aiming at breeding new and novel cultivars for the Australian
flower industry. A sound knowledge in plant biology, genetics and
microscopy is essential. Experience in plant breeding and genetic
analyses would be an advantage.

The program is funded by the Rural Industries Research and Development
Corporation (RIRDC) and the scholarship is valued at $A18,600 pa and may
be renewed up to three years. The successful applicant will gain an
excellent training in Plant Genetics & Breeding, through integrated
studies of plant reproductive biology, hybridisation, cytogenetics and
molecular marker analysis, with Dr. Guijun Yan and Prof. JA Considine.

Please send written application with a resume, academic record, statement
of any relevant experience, and names and addresses of three referees to
