Evolution of the eye

I read somewhere a short pharagraph about a study where people
simulated the evolution of the eye using the computer.

They started with several flat layers of cells that could mutate
according to specific rules. After a number generations, something
similiar to an eye evolved.

When this sounds really vague to you, then you know the reason for
this post. Unfortunatly, I cannot find the article anywhere and would
appreciate any help - either the article or places I could go looking
for it.
