Alergic reaction to a bee sting

I have had a serious alergic reaction to a bee sting. 
The only symptom was excessive swelling of the affected leg, which slowly
developed over 48 hours.  Am I now alergic for life and what probable
reaction may another sting cause?  

My Doctor advised me to take anitihistamine and Predisone.

Has anyone had experience with such a case and what advice can you give me.
