Job Description for a Biology Consultant at Mahidol Wittayanusorn School
(MWITS)
MWITS is the first science school in Thailand. We are in close contacts with
other schools such as IMSA in the USA, Busan Science Academy in Korea , and
The Australian Science and Mathematics School at Flinders University. We
have an intention to bring standards of our school close to the world class
level.
Each student is provided with a laptop PC with wireless connection where
they can get information all the time. In addition to normal courses
students are
required to do short research projects in the area of their interests
(Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, or Computer Science), followed by
writing up,
and presentations at the end of year 12. They are also required to give
scientific seminars using research papers from journals similar to what
students at
universities have to do. It is quite demanding for the teachers to keep up
with this selected group of high ability students. Overseas consultant
program in
seeking experienced teachers/professors to be at school is, therefore, part
of an attempt to familiarize our students and teachers with foreigners and
to learn
from visitors.
The duty of a mentor is relatively simple. A mentor will have a desk sitting
among teachers where students-teachers can come for consultations. Some will
come for help with seminar topics, some will come seeking suggestion on
research, some will come for advice on teaching etc. The mentor will also be
asked
for help on the improvement of the present biology curriculum. In summary, a
mentor will help facilitating a good atmosphere for learning as well as
biology
curriculum improvement for high ability students. We also place a strong
emphasis on e-learning. Any input on this aspect will be most welcome.
Finally, we will
ask a mentor to write a brief report of the visit to be submitted to the
School Governing Board. Majority of the board members are from universities.
A few of
them are current or former presidents of Thai universities.
We are seeking two mentors in 2007 to be at school at different times for a
period of 1-2 months each for a total of 90 man-days. A candidate with a PhD
in any
field of biology with experience to carry out the above duty will be an
advantage. The optimum time to be at MWITS would be a period between June1 -
September 30 or a period between November 1 - February 28. The first period
is the preferred one. Other times will be school vacations when students
would
be back homes and majority of staff will make trips to various places
including overseas seeking new experience. We use grade 10, 11, and 12
system for
high school here in Thailand. There are 240 students in each grade. During
school term students would stay in dormitories within the school compound.
We
have a fitness gymnasium with selected kind of facilities including a
medium-size swimming pool.
We will pay for airfares to and from Thailand. Accommodation is provided at
school. Even though a salary of about US$2,800 may not be that attractive
but a very good Thai lunch at school is about one US dollar. Other things
are also relatively inexpensive. Your partner is welcome at school and stay
with the mentor but I am afraid we can only pay the airfares and salary to
the mentor. Please feel free to contact me at thanit At UNSWalumni.com
