Postdoctoral Positions in Biosciences

Biosciences Division

Oak Ridge National Laboratory

Oak Ridge, Tennessee

ORNL07-44-BSD

Project Description:

Postdoctoral positions are available in the Biosciences Division at Oak
Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) http://www.ornl.gov for individuals
with training in microbiology, molecular biology, genetics and
biogeochemistry. Successful candidates will join a multi-disciplinary
team of investigators who apply advanced genomics-enabled techniques to
understand the activity and ecology of microorganisms in support of US
Dept. of Energy missions.

Candidate(s) are desired to participate in a wide variety of projects
ranging from systems biology to microbial ecology. Our group has ongoing
systems biology studies of Zymomonas mobilis, Clostridium thermocellum,
Desulfovibrio desulfuricans G20, Desulfovibrio vulgaris and Geobacter
metallireducens that utilize technologies such as controlled
cultivation, transcriptomics, metabolomics, proteomics in conjunction
with classical approaches to understand gene functions and genetic
regulatory networks. We are presently determining whole genome sequence
data for several bacterial species, which will be used to elucidate the
molecular mechanisms of how sulfate-reducing bacteria produce
methylmercury (MeHg) using comparative genomics, transcriptomics and
traditional microbiological techniques.Additional ongoing studies focus
on the molecular microbial ecology of environments such as soils under
bioenergy crops, contaminated groundwaters, biofilms and others as they
relate to understanding the terrestrial carbon cycle, lignocellulose
degradation, and the cleanup and fate of environmental contaminants such
as uranium, mercury and other metals. These projects use a mix of state
of the art molecular analyses techniques such as metagenomics,
quantitative PCR, and microarrays to elucidate the relationships between
microbial community composition, activity and the functioning of the
system.

Qualifications:

Candidates must have a Ph.D with experience in areas such as
microbiology, molecular biology, biogeochemistry or a related field.
Additional experience is desired but not required in fermentation,
anaerobic microbial physiology, microarray technology and
bioinformatics. Applicants cannot have received the most recent degree
more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete
all degree requirements before starting their appointment.

How to Apply:

Qualified applicants may apply online at
https://www2.orau.gov/ORNL_POST/. All applicants will need to register
before they can begin the online application. For complete instructions,
on how to apply, please see the instructions at

http://www.orau.gov/orise/edu/ornl/ornl-pdpm/application.htm. When
applying for this position, please reference the position title and
number (ORNL07-44-BSD).

This appointment is offered through the ORNL Postdoctoral Research
Associates Program and is administered by Oak Ridge Associated
Universities (ORAU). This appointment is open to all qualified U.S. and
non-U.S. citizens who currently work in the U.S and are available for
interview, without regard to race, color, age, religion, sex, national
origin, physical or mental disability, or status as a Vietnam-era
veteran or disabled veteran.

Other open positions can be found at

About the Employer:

"The Scientist's" magazine recognized ORNL as one of the "best places to
work for Postdocs." ... and ORAU was recognized as one of the Best
Employers by Business Tennessee magazine.

ORNL is a multiprogram science and technology laboratory managed for the
U.S. Department of Energy. Scientists and engineers at ORNL conduct
basic and applied research and development to create scientific
knowledge and technological solutions that strengthen the nation's
leadership in key areas of science; increase the availability of clean,
abundant energy; restore and protect the environment; and contribute to
national security.

ORNL also performs other work for the Department of Energy, including
isotope production, information management, and technical program
management, and provides research and technical assistance to other
organizations.
