Research position in gene therapy

A PhD scholarship, funded in part by a biotech company, is available for 3
years at the School of Science, University of Western Sydney, Nepean. 

The School is located at a new site just north of Parramatta in Sydney,
Australia. 

The proposed research project is concerned with the use of cultured skin as
a vehicle for delivering biologically active compounds to host animals
following grafting. Research has focussed on stably transfecting constructs
containing the insulin gene into skin and other cells using lipofection or
retroviruses. The aim has been to reduce blood glucose levels in diabetic
animals grafted with transfected cells.
 
The scholarship will be awarded to a person interested in progressing the
project energetically to the next stage, including regulation of insulin
secretion in grafted tissue.
Techniques include cell culture, grafting, immunochemistry, blotting,
molecular methods for production of gene constructs for transfection into
cells and detection of gene activity.

It is desirable that applicants should have a first class Honours degree or
equivalent. The scholarship is available immediately. Applications should
include a curriculum vitae, academic record, evidence of appropriate
laboratory experience, publications and the names and addresses of 3
academic referees.
