The JGI is pleased to announce release 1 of the Chlamydomonas
reinhardtii genome sequence, along with preliminary gene annotation.
This initial assembly is based on approximately 9X whole genome shotgun
coverage in small-insert paired plasmid ends. Additional linking
information is being generated at the JGI in the next few months, and a
revised assembly incorporating this additional information, along with
mapping data, is expected in spring 2003.
First pass gene models have been obtained using Green Genie (courtesy
of Susan Dutcher) and through JGI's annotation pipeline.
Both sets of predictions should be viewed as preliminary, and we'll
be combining and improving them over the coming months to produce a
that better incorporates EST and cDNA information. For now, these two
sets of gene models allow for easy navigation of identified coding regions.
The release 1 assembly and annotation are available via the JGI's
Genome Portal at <>genome.jgi-psf.org/chlre1/chlre1.home.html. To
introduce new users to this site and they many ways that Chlamy data
can be accessed through
it, the JGI will be hosting three teleconferences over the next few weeks
to walk users through the Chlamy Portal. We'll show you how to BLAST
vs. the genome, predicted transcripts, or predicted peptides; do text-
based searches to find homologs of known genes in other organisms; find
proteins containing domains of interest, etc. To participate, simply
e-mail Diego Martinez at
<mailto:chlamy at cuba.jgi-psf.org>chlamy at cuba.jgi-psf.org and reserve a
time. We will be
doing sessions Thursday February 13th,10:00 to 11:00 AM, Wednesday February
19th, 4:00 to 5:00 PM, and Thursday February 19th 10:00 to 11:00 AM.
There will be a maximum of 25 people each session, and if there is an interest
we will hold more training sessions. Be sure to be in front of an
Note that all times are US Pacific Time.
