The Convention on Biological Diversity deals with all scales of
biodiversity. Invertebrates are the most numerous group in
terrestrial ecosystems, both in species diversity as in biomass. They
represent more than 90 % of animal diversity. Thus deep knowledge of
our environment needs a better study of the extraordinary ecological,
ethological and taxonomic diversity of invertebrates.
The FIFI 2003, fifth biennial session of the International Insect Film
Festival is organised by the “Office Pour les Insectes et leur
environnement du Languedoc-Roussillon” (OPIE-LR). The FIFI will
take place from 15 to 19 October 2003 in Prades (Pyrénées-Orientales,
France) at the National Science Holiday occasion.
This event is an opportunity to meet the public, 22 000 people
attended the previous Festival in 2001. It’s intended for
increase awareness on invertebrates and their habitats, in order to
promote their conservation and also films realisations. Every two
years, the selection committee reward best films from the five
Since the first event in 1995, the FIFI received the European Year of
Nature Conservation label. The FIFI 2001, was labelled by the campaign
"Europe, a mutual patrimony" of the European Council and the
International Biodiversity Observation Year (IBOY) of the
international DIVERSITAS scientific program.
With a playful and interactive approach, allowing to multiply opinions
and comparing all points of view about insects, the FIFI propose:
· international audio-visual competition (documentaries, animation
films, ...) around insects and continental invertebrates.
· the scientific and naturalist forum welcomes laboratories,
associations, entomological and environmental education organisations.
· conferences involving all citizens :
o Old trees and biodiversity conservation in Europe, from the
scientist to the manager, in partnership with Nature Reserve of
France, WWF, Forest National Office, Agriculture ministry…
o Scientific education and environmental education, which
· organic market revealing new environmental friendly farming uses
· artistic exhibitions : photographs, sculptures, artistic
· living shows : ephemeral strolling, "insectoïd" carnivalesque parade
· fieldtrips to improve the natural patrimony image, with
entomologists and naturalists.
