Hello
I have a position to advertise, details as below:
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Syngenta / Kelly Scientific Resources
Research Scientist (Two-Year Position)
Understanding the mode of action and resistance risk associated with
novel insecticidal compounds is a key step in the development of new
crop-protection products. This position involves both laboratory-based and
computational studies within a team which use genetic, physiological and
biochemical approaches to answer critical questions about the way small
molecules act on invertebrate pests. The work will involve the handling of
chemicals, model organisms and pest insects. Full training will be given
on all aspects of safe procedure.
The job will involve working both independently and as part of a team
and using organisational skills to work flexibly across a number of
projects simultaneously. Projects will involve the application of genetic
approaches in model or pest organisms to the study of pathophysiological
response to insecticide treatment or to the understanding of the basis of
insecticide resistance.
The job holder will work within a team and provide bioinformatics and
molecular biology support for the team’s laboratory-based research program.
This may involve cloning work, construction of cDNA libraries, targeted
sequencing, or the building of constructs for generation of transgenic
invertebrates or for in-vitro expression. Computer based research will
involve using bioinformatics tools to query genomic databases, identify
gene homologs, construct sequence alignments, and develop strategies for
mapping, cloning or building of constructs for transformation work.
In addition the job holder may be required to assist with the design
and running of behavioural or electrophysiological assays aimed at
determining or monitoring mode of action or establishing the intrinsic
potencies of new lead chemicals. The job holder will be able to deliver
high quality data to tight deadlines, to rapidly learn new tasks and have a
creative and scientific approach to problem solving.
The position will be filled by someone with postgraduate
qualifications and/or practical experience in biological or biochemical
research. They will have practical experience of molecular biology
techniques and model organism genetics. They will be computer literate
with experience of using bioinformatics and database tools. Laboratory
experience in any of the following areas would also be of value but is not
essential; microinjection, microscopy (esp. confocal or live-tissue calcium
imaging), cell or tissue culture, electrophysiology, Drosophila or
C.elegans behavioural assays. Good organisation skills and attention to
detail are required. He or she will have excellent written and oral
communication skills.
This role will be based at Syngenta, Jealott's Hill International Research
Centre, Bracknell, Berkshire.
