Graduate Research Assistantships in Tree Physiology at the Master of
Science-Level
 
The Forestry Department at Mississippi State University is seeking
applicants for two graduate research assistantships (M.S.-level) supported
by USDA-NRICGP to study tree physiology.  Each position will be for two
years and will provide a competitive stipend and full payment of graduate
tuition.  Academic work will start in January of 1998.
   (1) Reproductive Carbon Allocation:  The successful candidate will use
14CO2 to define C source-sink relationships among individual leaves and
developing seeds on reproductive shoots of oak.  This project is in
cooperation with the U.S. Forest Service, Center for Bottomland Hardwood
Research.  Research will begin in spring of 1998.  Contact and supervisor:
Dr. Mark E. Kubiske (mkubiske at cfr.msstate.edu).
   (2) Nitrogen Deficiency and Root Sensitivity:  The successful candidate
will investigate the sensitivity of fine root production to patches of soil
N as affected by whole-plant N deficiency in cottonwood.  This project is
in cooperation with Michigan Technological University.  Research can begin
in the fall of 1997 or winter of 1998.  Contact and supervisor:  Dr.

   Qualifications for both positions are: B.S. degree in forestry, botany,
or plant-science-related field; good written and oral communication skills;
and an interest and ability in the areas of tree physiology or plant
ecology/physiology.  Applicants for one or both of these positions should
