Research project on fine root production of trees seeks a graduate research
assistant at the Master of Science-level. The position will be for two
years and will provide a competitive stipend, including graduate tuition
and opportunities for travel. The individual selected will be expected to
investigate the growth and biochemical responses of Populus roots to
nutrient addition. He/she will also have the opportunity to expand in
other areas of interest within the broader project. The project is a
3-year study of nitrogen (N) controls over tree root production and the
implications of these to biomass production and N uptake of Populus in
field settings. We will establish field & greenhouse nutritional studies,
and use minirhizotron image analysis & remote sensing, together with
conventional ecological and physiological analyses, to evaluate root and
ecosystem responses to N. Qualifications are: B.S. degree in forestry,
botany, or plant-science-related field; very good written and oral
communication skills; and an interest and ability in the areas of tree
physiology or plant ecology/physiology. The start date for this position
is 01 August, 1997, but will be extended until a suitable applicant is

fall semester and by 01 November for academic work in the spring semester.
