	Post-Doctoral Research Associate at the
	Laboratory of Tree-Ring Research, JOB#12950

2-yr position with start date negotiable, but preferably starting between
January and June 1999.

Topic of research: Ecophysiological modeling of mature Pinus
ponderosa (1) cambial activity, (2) xylem structure, and (3) isotopic
chemistry of the wood cellulose.

Minimum Requirements: Ph.D. in natural sciences or system
modelling, with a biological science emphasis in graduate program.
Background in plant physiology with experience in computer modeling.
Stable isotope experience a plus. Ability to understand and apply
FORTRAN code to an existing model (TREERING 3) simulating
growth-controlling physiological processes in trees and the resulting
structure in the main stem.

Responsibilities: Participate with a team of scientists in validating
the model using field measurements as well as expanding the code to
include algorithms for incorporation of varying carbon, hydrogen and
oxygen isotopes into the cellular structure of simulated trees.
Become familiar with the model and its relevance to dendro-
chronological investigations. Help assemble available climatic,
isotopic, and cell structure data, and make changes in model
parameters necessary to represent the particular study area. Apply
the model to conditions in the selected study area. Use available
research data to test and validate portions of the model. Adapt and
apply the model to "What if ?" questions. Document all changes and
refine existing documentation for future modeling work at the
Laboratory of Tree-Ring Research.

This is a unique opportunity to participate in an emerging new field
of simulation modeling applied to dendrochronology, and to work with
more than 50 faculty, staff and students at the Laboratory of
Tree-Ring Research, University of Arizona. Send letter of interest
referring to Job #12950, CV, and 3 letters of recommendation by Dec.
1, 1998, to Prof. Steven W. Leavitt, Lab. of Tree-Ring Research, 105
W. Stadium, University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ 85721.
(sleavitt at ltrr.arizona.edu; phone: 520-621-1608)
Review will begin Dec. 1 and continue until position is filled.
