RESEARCH ASSOCIATE (IKE RUSSELL POST-DOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP)
The Desert Laboratory, University of Arizona

The Desert Laboratory, a University of Arizona facility with a 95-year
legacy in desert ecology and geosciences, invites applications for a
two-year Research Associate (Post-Doctoral Fellowship) in memory of Ike
Russell. Mr. Russell, a patron of arid lands research, used his skills
as a bush pilot to guide University of Arizona scientists to otherwise
inaccessible field sites. The Russell Fellowship is open to researchers
with a Ph.D. in Ecology, Geosciences or a related field, and a research
interest in arid lands. The 1999-2001 Russell Fellow will focus on
renewing long-term ecological research efforts on Tumamoc Hill, an
800-ha preserve on Tucson's west side, and other established plots in
the Sonoran Desert. The fellowship will provide myriad opportunities for
research and publication on vegetation dynamics on some of the longest
censused vegetation plots in the world. The Russell Fellow also will
play a leading role in establishing protocols for annual monitoring on
Tumamoc Hill.

Preference will be given to plant or community ecologists who have
strong quantitative and spatial analytical skills. A letter of
interest, resume, and address, earliest starting date (beginning
September 1, 1999), telephone number and fax number of two references
must be sent to:
