I have followed the discussions on this list since its inception because of
my varios journal-related research interests. The current string is of
particular concern because I am in the middle of a project that examines the
(often newly acquired) roles of scientific & technical journals in mandating
(prescribing, demanding, recommending) the deposition or post-publication
distribution of research-related information. This includes data sets, research
protocols, auxilary result compilations, actual materials, strains & stocks,
etc. I have published on the general topic as observed in genetics, but did
not specifically examine the relationships between authors, journals and
the data depositories like Genbank, EMBL, etc. I must say that the notion of
"fake ID numbers" did not occur to me.
My computer is about to log me off. I would be interested in hearing from
listreaders concerning any other abberations in this information dissemination
