Introduction to the meeting
The Federative Research Institute " Cell Signalling and Plant
Biotechnology " (CNRS/INRA/ Toulouse Universities) in collaboration with
the largest french association of seed companies (ASEDIS-SO) is
organizing the first Symposium in the series " New frontiers in Plant
Science and Plant biotechnology " to be held in Toulouse on March 5-9,
2000. The main objective of the symposium is to encourage a
cross-fertilization of ideas from the most advanced research in plant
biology and the latest developments of plant biotechnology and plant
breeding. It is our aim that these meetings will be organized on a
regular basis.
Scientific program
The five sessions of the conference cover a wide range of topics :
- Plant genome and genomics (invited speakers : F. Quetier, S. Tingey,
M. Bevan, R. Wing)
- Transfer and expression of foreign genes (invited speakers : A.
Hamilton, A. Depicker, B. Hohn, D. Della Penna)
- Carbon metabolism (invited speakers : S. Smeekens, M.J. Emes, L.
Willmitzer, S. Delrot)
- Plant disease resistance (invited speakers : P.J.G.M. De Wit, J.
Glazebrook, D. Scheel ; P. Schulze-Lefert)
- Control of plant development (invited speakers : C.Dumas, B. Scheres,
S. Dellaporta, J ; Chory)
Each session will be presented in the form of plenary lectures, selected
short oral communications and posters.
Satellite meeting
A satellite meeting " Economic challenges of plant biotechnology
developments in Europe " including four sessions will be held on March
9th :
- Plant biotechnology development throughout the world : scientific and
strategic aspects
- Regulations : gaps, inconsistencies and new trends
- Biotechnology and sustainable agriculture : North and South issues
- Plant biotechnology and regional development
