Assistant/Associate Professor of Corn Breeding and Genetics
Plant breeding faculty position with emphasis on innovative research
that integrates classical and molecular genetics in an applied
breeding and genetics program. This is a 9-month tenure track
position with opportunity for summer appointment. Responsibilities
will be allocated as 75% research and 25% teaching in the Department
of Crop Sciences, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The
successful applicant is expected to develop an
internationally-recognized, externally-funded research program that
develops, integrates, and demonstrates the value of contemporary
genetic techniques to enhance traditional corn breeding.
Collaboration with research faculty in the Department of Crop
Sciences, participation in the Illinois Maize Breeding and Genetics
Laboratory, interaction with corn breeders and geneticists in private
industry is expected. The successful candidate will develop and
offer annually an undergraduate course in the general area of plant
breeding and genetics. Teaching responsibilities also will include
annual participation in another course offered in the Department of
Crop Sciences. Ph. D. in plant breeding or a related discipline is
required. The candidate must demonstrate an understanding of
emerging technologies, such as biotechnology, genomics, or
bioinformatics, and be able to develop methods that enhance the
application of these technologies in a contemporary plant breeding
program. The successful applicant must demonstrate an ability and
desire to plan and coordinate field-oriented research for the
practical improvement of corn. Possible research areas include, but
are not limited to, insect or pathogen resistance, value-added
traits, and tolerance to environmental stresses. The candidate must
demonstrate excellent potential to conduct and report independent and
team-based research, attract extramural research funding, and develop
an outstanding teaching program. For appointment at the Associate
Professor rank, the candidate must exhibit a very strong record of
scholarship that includes credentials meeting the standards required
to attain tenure at the University of Illinois. Such credentials
will likely include a minimum of 5 years of experience in research
and teaching in plant breeding or related areas, with an outstanding
record of initiating, completing, and publishing the results of
successful projects. Salary commensurate with training and
experience. Starting date: January 1, 2002 or when a suitable
