A PhD student position is available in the field of arbuscular
mycorrhizal symbiosis in maize. Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi
associate intimately with more than 80% of the vascular plants and
enhance the phosphate nutrition of their hosts. At present relatively
little is known about the molecular components responsible for the
signal exchange leading to mutual recognition, the establishment and
maintenance of the symbiosis. The identification of plant mutants
exhibiting altered mycorrhizal phenotypes and the subsequent cloning
of the corresponding mutated genes selects factors crucial for the
formation of a functional AM symbiosis.
The project makes use of already identified mutants in maize
displaying altered mycorrhizal properties and will involve cloning
and characterization of genes from transposon induced alleles.
The position is immediately available. A background in plant
molecular biology and genetics is preferred but not required.
