phage-infected E. coli culture

This is a response to a previous post (I lost the address) describing E. coli
cultures that did fine and then became totally lysed at stationary phase.

Is it possible that your coli harbor a lysogenized bacteriophage? It might
undergo excision during growth and then begin a cycle of lytic infection
that wouldn't be detected until several hours of growth had occurred.
