I have used the protocol described in ;
Bassam etal
Anal. Biochem 196:80 (1991)
We have used it for DNA sequencing and SSCP gels.

We have experience a considerable decrease in background if we use PDA
as a crosslinker, see above reference. In addition we also found better
results if the developer is ice cold when you add it to the gel. Again,
lower background.Best of luck
