When we did some Bacillus genetics a few years ago, my student rapidly found that he couldn't trust spreaders which were kept in alcohol and flamed before use. So he made dozens of glass spreaders and always kept a supply autoclaved. You can buy disposable, sterile ones nowadays, I think. MH
