glycerol vs glucose

Dear Peter Harris:
     Glycerol and glucose are both carbon sources. However, with glucose in a 
culture you'll get fermentation (even under aerobic conditions) and a drop in 
pH to the extent that some bacterial cultures are killed. Glycerol is utilized 
with not much change in pH and hence culture viability.
