Difco's R2A agar is a relatively low nutrient medium that generates high
counts in our laboratory. This medium is readily available and easy to
use.
Oligotrophic Agar is an approach for a more research type approach. A
source of information on obtaining and growing bacteria that grow under
extremely low nutrient conditions (conditions commonly found in some lakes
at different times) is publications by Jean Poindexer. She is a great
source of information on this interesting group of microorganisms.
