Optochine is a chemical , ethylhydrocupreine hydrochloride.
Ethylhydrocupreine , the base for the optochine disc , is insoluble in
water. However , the hydrochloride of ethylhydrocupreine is completely
soluble in water. It is a derivate of the alkaloid hydroquinine which
is prepared by the hydrogenation , demethylation , and ethylation of
guinine.
