Vancomysin resistant S. aureus

1)  With the exception of the laboratory derived strain of WC Noble, 
neither vanA nor vanB containing strains of S. aureus have been
identified to date.

2)  But there are clinical isolates showing at least decresed
susceptibility to glycopeptides:  

Check out:  Mainardi et al. J. Infec Dis 171:1646 where strains with
teicoplanin MICs of 8-16 microg/ml are described.  

And Shlaes & Shales in Clin Infec Dis 20:1071 entitled " Teicoplanin
selects for S. aureus that is resistant to vancomycin."

3)  One way or another we will have clinical resistance to the
glycopeptides in Staph. aureus.

   Select for them and they will come.
