INSTITUTE OF MOLECULAR BIOLOGY AND BIOTECHNOLOGY and DEPT. OF BIOLOGY,
UNIVERSITY OF CRETE, IRAKLIO-CRETE, GREECE

AVAILABLE POSITION:
One graduate student (work leading to a PhD degree)
STARTING DATE :
October 1996
RESEARCH PROJECT:
Molecular characterization of secretory protein translocation across
biological membranes using E.coli as a model system. E.coli preprotein
translocase,a complex membrane protein, has been purified and the
reaction has been fully reconstituted in vitro (Economou and Wickner,
1994 Cell 78:835-43; Economou et al., 1995 Cell, 83:1171-81). We wish
to explore further the energetics, catalytic mechanism and structure
of preprotein translocase. To this end the project will make use of
molecular biology and biochemical techniques together with biophysical
studies in collaboration with Horst Vogel (Lausanne Federal
Polytechnic; for recent work see: Soekarjo M et al,1996 Biochemistry
35:1232-41; Pawlak M et al, 1994 Biochemistry 33:283-90; Vogel H 1992,
Quarterly Reviews of Biophysics, 25, 433-57).
DESIRED EXPERIENCE:
Honours degree in molecular biology, biochemistry or related
discipline. Previous research experience is a plus. Successful
candidates can either join the Graduate programme in Molecular and
Cellular biology of the University of Crete or the one in Lausanne.
FUNDING:
Funding for the project is provided by European Union and Hellenic
Research Secretariat sources.
OTHER INFO:
Active collaborations exist with several other European labs (as part
of EU-funded networks) and exchange visits to carry out experiments
using specialized equipment are encouraged. The work will be carried
out in the brand new Biology labs (Voutes Campus, outside Iraklio). The
official language of the lab is English.
