? PE2 Medium (C. botulinum cult.)

Hi all,

Does anyone have background info. about PE2 Medium; it is used to
cultivate Clostridium botulinum from foods. I have found the recipe in
Atlas' Handbook of Microbiological Media, but without references. A few
questions that interest me are: What does the name stand for? Who
developed it and why? Why use peas, instead of using cooked meat or
similar in the recipe? Thank you for any information.
