What is proteose peptone (Difco)?

Peptones are peptic digests of various proteins added as a nitrogen
source to bacteriological media. They differ in their ability to support
growth of fastidious microorganisms. If you would like to grow
nonfastidious bacteria, probably any peptone from any producer will do.
If your organisms are more demanding, stick to the exact type of peptone
described in the literature - Difco alone produces three types of
proteose peptone and their grrowth-sustaining properties are strictly
quality-controlled.
