I am looking for opinions that people have about the concept of a "core-laboratory". I am a
pathologist in a 450 bed hospital that covers the Top End of Australia. The patient load is
quite high in that we do the majority of the work for the Northern Territory as well as the
in-patient load. Currently, we have two Histopathologists, a General Pathologist and a Clinical
Microbiologist (myself).
We are looking at developing a "core laboratory" consisting of routine automated haematology and
chemical pathology.
I have heard varied anecdotal stories about the pros and cons of such a concept (and some horror
stories). I would appreciate anybodys anecdotes or references to hard data on the pros and
cons of a "core laboratory". In your response I would appreciate your designation,
qualifications and the size of your institution. Please E-mail me as soon as possible, and if
it is more comfortable, make it anonymous.
Thanks for your help.
