Look up work on chemotaxis. In order for a bacterium
to know if it is swimming toward a food source or away
from a food source, it has to "remember" what the
concentration was a few seconds ago and compare it to
the current concentration, then decide whether to keep
swimming, or to tumble about and head off in a different
direction.
There is no "learning" involved, the bacteria
never get any better at the task, as far as I know.
