Sorry to have not got back to the newsgroup before but I have been
experiencing e-mail problems. I am writing this from someone else's
account.
Thank you to everyone who replied with their thoughts.
We now think the organism is a Mycoplasma possibly M. pneumoniae.
EM showed a rod 0.1 X 5-8 um with no spiral structure. It resembled a
match with a head at both ends. This corresponds with M. pneumoniae
life cycle which tends to coccal forms splitting off from the end of the
rod.
M. pneumoniae serology was positive for total antibody. IgM to follow.
Normal bacterial cultures are still no growth. Special Mycoplasma media
has been set up.
Patient is getting better and has been discharged.
Will let newsgroup know if Mycoplasma is isolated.
