The fluorescence responce of the liberated methyl-umbelliferyl compound is quite pH sensitive. The optimum for fluorescence is in the pH 8 to 9 region. Hence it is pretty bad if acidified. Any basic text on MUB substrates should give full details. Peter Harris, Reading.
