Marc, I haven't seen the 5/1/ issue yet but there was another essay on the 
tech transfer/patent policy in the 3/6 issue of SCiENCE that you should have 
read and commented on.  the tone of the piece is positive, somaybe you 
missed. one point was made about the bayh/dole act which is the beginnings of 
the university patenting the you despise, may be tangentially responsible 
for over 200,000 jobs in the past 15 years.  Most are from start-ups that 
emerged after the inventors left the university where most of the initial 
R&D is done. from this persons perspective the patent arrangemnet that 
the universitys have embarked on will be a good thing as it has been a 
good thing.
